Welcome to the Golden Trimester
The second trimester — weeks 13 through 27 of pregnancy — is widely considered the most comfortable period for many expectant mothers. For most women, the exhausting nausea of the first trimester fades, energy returns, and the bump becomes beautifully visible. It's also the trimester filled with some of the most exciting milestones: feeling your baby move for the first time, finding out the sex (if you choose to), and seeing your baby's face in detail on the anatomy scan.
What's Happening With Your Body: Weeks 13–27
Weeks 13–16: The Energy Returns
- Morning sickness typically eases significantly
- Your uterus rises above your pubic bone and your bump becomes visible
- You may notice your skin glowing — increased blood flow gives that famous "pregnancy glow"
- Round ligament pain may begin — a sharp or stretching sensation on the sides of your abdomen as your uterus grows
- Breasts may feel less tender than in the first trimester
Weeks 17–20: Halfway There
- Quickening — the first baby movements, often described as flutters, bubbles, or gentle pops. First-time moms typically feel this between 18–22 weeks.
- Your anatomy scan (usually scheduled between 18–22 weeks) gives a detailed look at your baby's organs, limbs, and position
- Many couples choose to find out the baby's sex at this scan
- You may notice a darker line running down your abdomen — the linea nigra — caused by hormonal changes
- Nasal congestion is common due to increased blood flow to mucous membranes
Weeks 21–27: Growing Stronger
- Baby movements become stronger and more regular — you may feel kicks, rolls, and hiccups
- Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions) may begin — tightening of the uterus that is generally painless
- Heartburn and indigestion become more common as the uterus pushes against the stomach
- Lower back pain may develop as your center of gravity shifts
- Swelling in feet and ankles can begin
- Glucose screening test is typically offered between weeks 24–28 to check for gestational diabetes
Your Baby's Development in the Second Trimester
| Weeks | Baby Size | Key Developments |
|---|---|---|
| 13–14 | Lemon (3 inches) | Facial features developing, fingerprints forming |
| 16–17 | Avocado (4.5 inches) | Skeleton hardening, baby can make expressions |
| 20 | Banana (6.5 inches) | Halfway point; can hear sounds, swallowing amniotic fluid |
| 24 | Corn cob (12 inches) | Lungs developing, brain growing rapidly, responds to touch |
| 27 | Head of cauliflower (14 inches) | Eyes can open, REM sleep begins, taste buds active |
Important Appointments in the Second Trimester
- Anatomy scan (18–22 weeks): Detailed ultrasound to check baby's anatomy and development
- Routine prenatal check-ups: Usually every 4 weeks during this trimester
- Glucose tolerance test (24–28 weeks): Screens for gestational diabetes
- Cervical length check: Recommended for women with risk factors for preterm labor
Self-Care During the Second Trimester
- Exercise: This is an ideal trimester to stay active. Walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, and strength training are all generally safe. Check with your provider.
- Sleep: Start sleeping on your side (left side is often recommended) with a pregnancy pillow for support.
- Skincare: Moisturize regularly to support your stretching skin, though stretch marks are largely genetic.
- Mental health: Prenatal anxiety is common — don't hesitate to speak to your provider if you're feeling overwhelmed.
- Start planning: Research childcare, tour birth facilities, take a childbirth class, and begin your baby registry.
When to Call Your Doctor
Contact your healthcare provider promptly if you experience:
- Vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking
- Severe abdominal pain or cramping
- Signs of preeclampsia: sudden severe headache, visual changes, or rapid swelling of hands and face
- Decreased or absent fetal movement after 22 weeks
- Fever above 38°C (100.4°F)
The second trimester is a wonderful time to bond with your bump, rest up, and prepare for the exciting weeks ahead. Enjoy every moment!
